Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
