The evident and clear reality that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
