Colombian President Declares 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Once More' if United States Invades.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume of their war of words, increasing tensions between the two countries following US forces targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions coupled with Accusations

Addressing the press over the weekend, Trump threatened similar military action against Bogotá, asserting the nation faces serious problems and “run by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and selling it to the US."

Although Colombia remains the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Partnership

Colombia has long been a close partner of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and received bipartisan support in Washington, however, the relationship have deteriorated significantly since Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions including one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Strong Answer

In response to a query if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the 1990s, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he wrote online.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And should they arrest the president, which many of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the presidency.

"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have condemned the possibility of an invasion on Colombia.

Political and Financial Pressure

Washington cancelled his travel authorization after he called on American soldiers to disobey orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

Concurrently while America bolstered its troop levels in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
