The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
Matteo's Unforeseen Presence
One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
