"When are you chatting with the band?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile fans have also petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their visuals often show them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The band are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will always be their top commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
