Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
